HC: You sound more than a little like some nineteenth-century poetsAmerican romantics like Bryant or Emerson. Many of Emerson's ideas about universality and oneness were borrowed from the Eastthat is, the Far Eastand Hinduism.

RM: Well, maybe Judaism also comes from the East, or rather, I think it is the meeting place between the West and the East. My ideas, my feelings, are very Jewish. I feel very Jewish. The Sh'ma [Jewish affirmation of God's unity] is my source and expresses the essence of my ideas about oneness. I feel that the distance between things is very fragile. Our skins, our bodies are fragile fences, a border between us and others, between inside and outside. And there are times when I don't even feel this border at all; then everything merges into one. [Pause] There are other times when I really don't know.
